What is the Government Information and Maps Department

Subtitle
The government is us; we are the government, you and I. ~ Theodore Roosevelt

The FAU Libraries Government Information and Maps Department is a cornerstone of enlightenment and empowerment, dedicated to "Keeping America Informed" and "Promoting Access to Government Knowledge." As the solitary custodian of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, it tirelessly champions the dissemination of Federal Government information to diverse audiences.

Upon entering the halls of the S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus, one is welcomed by the Government Documents Collection, a rich repository located on the First Floor West. Here, the atmosphere is alive with intellectual curiosity as visitors can navigate through the two meticulously organized collections. The first is the Federal Documents print collection, which is classified under the SuDoc Classification System. The second collection is the Florida Government Documents, organized with KWIC Index Classification numbers; the FAU Libraries catalog ensures streamlined user access and navigation of the collections. Adjacent to the Government Documents printed collections, the libraries’ Map Collection allows patrons to explore and deepen their comprehension of geographical terrains and historical contexts through visually engaging experiences.

Government documents are no longer confined solely to print collections; today, both the Federal and State Governments produce their content in digital formats. The FAU Libraries catalog seamlessly integrates Government Information Electronic Collections, enhancing accessibility to these invaluable resources. As primary recipients of government publications distributed through the FDLP and the State Library, both curate extensive arrays of materials, enriching the informational landscape for all seeking enlightenment.

Furthermore, the department's commitment to "Promoting Access to Government Knowledge" is evident through initiatives such as the Catalog of Government Publication (CGP), guiding seekers through a comprehensive catalog of print and online resources. This dedication ensures that every avenue of inquiry remains explored in the quest for knowledge.

By fulfilling its mission to keep the American public well-versed and to promote access to government knowledge, the FAU Libraries Government Information and Maps Department has been serving as a beacon of enlightenment, empowering individuals within the FAU community, constituents of the 22nd Congressional District, and the broader populace of South Florida since 1963.
