A centuries old celebration brought book artists, printers, and makers to the University Libraries

Wayzgoose 2023 at Jaffe Center for Book Arts

The Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University Libraries came alive with creativity and tradition as it hosted the 2023 Wayzgoose Festival on August 27. The event transformed the third floor of the Wimberly Library into a vibrant celebration of print traditions and artistic craftsmanship. Over 200 attendees gathered to revel in the festivities, with live music, engaging workshops, a bustling Makers Marketplace, and delectable treats.

Wayzgoose, a holiday rooted in history, originating centuries ago as print shops papered windows to ward off the diminishing natural light signaling the arrival of autumn and winter, continues to draw printers, makers, and book artists. Jaffe Center hosted the celebration for several years, and the festival finally came back to the in-person format this summer for the first time since 2019.

One of the standout features of this year's Wayzgoose Festival was the enchanting live music that resonated through the library. Abasi Hanif and his ensemble, Livin' the Rhythm, as well as the talented Lubben Brothers, graced the event with their melodious tunes, creating a captivating atmosphere that made for a wonderful afternoon.

"The drumming by Abasi Hanif and his Livin' the Rhythm ensemble was one of my favorite things. I could feel that percussion in my bones, and I know others did, too, and it was an absolute joy to see people participate in the drum circle with the group. The Lubben Brothers always nearly make me cry. They are so good and know so well how to tap into musical awe and wonder. Every time they play for us, I think, "These guys are going to hit the Big Time someday,"  - John Cutrone, Director of Jaffe Center for Book Arts.

For those seeking a deeper understanding of printmaking, a gallery talk with Ellen Knudson, a prominent printer from Crooked Letter Press, was a highlight of the day. Ellen not only shared insights into her craft but also guided guests in using one of the center's Vandercook printers to create their own unique copy of the Wayzgoose print. Her presence added a layer of authenticity and hands-on experience to the festival.

John Cutrone shared that he loves being with book artists and hearing their stories of printing and papermaking and bookbinding and the poets and writers they work with, and having Ellen Knudsen as a guest of Jaffe Center for a few days has reminded him of that.

"I loved seeing people interact with Ellen in our print shop and print her special Wayzgoose poster, which (and I didn't even have a hand in this) she decided should read, "JOY DOES MATTER." Ellen is right. It does," said John.

The Makers Marketplace offered a treasure trove of handmade craft items from local artisans, allowing guests to explore and purchase unique creations while supporting the local arts community.

"The Wayzgoose Festival was outstanding! What a delightful event for a Sunday afternoon!" - Dr. Donna Read

"The event was fabulous! From the printing press to live music and the market!" - Ester Martinek

"Not only was it professional, it was inspiring, diverse, delightful, and entertaining. Looking forward to many more programs like this one in the near future." - Irene Scherer and Ivan Roseff

Robert Feeney of University Libraries Special Collections treated guests to fascinating telegraph demonstrations, offering a glimpse into the history of communication technology. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with this nostalgic form of communication and gain a deeper appreciation for the evolution of information exchange.

In the midst of the bustling festival, the Contemplation Tent by Louise Silk provided a serene oasis for reflection and creativity. While enjoying a quiet moment inside, guests could contribute to the Exquisite Corpse book, adding their own touch to a collaborative work of art.

The 2023 Wayzgoose Festival at JCBA was a resounding success, blending tradition, artistry, and joyful gatherings. It celebrated the timeless allure of print traditions while fostering connections within the artistic community.

In the words of John Cutrone, "The Wayzgoose tunes into two of my biggest interests: letterpress and books, and the ceremonies we attach to the changing seasons and the wheel of the year. It warms my heart to see people gather at Jaffe Center for the celebration."
