Open Education Week 2019

Welcome to Open Education Week (March 4-8, 2019)!

What is Open Education Week?

Open Education Week, begun in 2013, celebrates the global open movement in education.  The open education movement promotes the sharing of ideas and knowledge by providing free and open access to information, resources, and other materials to support and enhance 21st-century learning and education.

Why does open education matter?

Within an open education framework, students can share their creativity and ideas, which can then be built on by others to form new shareable knowledge.  Open education also can help relieve financial burdens associated with earning a university degree.  Similarly, faculty and instructors can customize learning materials for their classes, which gives students affordable access to quality materials they otherwise might not encounter or be able to afford.

How do FAU Libraries engage in the open education movement?

In August 2018, FAU Libraries created a reserves collection of textbooks for general education and high enrollment classes.  The collection is donations-based, but we have had a good response from students and faculty alike who have donated textbooks in order to help students save money on textbook purchases.  You can explore the collection online, and you can always ask us for assistance in determining whether we have your textbook(s) in our collection.
