2023 Authors & Artists Recognition Event

On Feb. 6, 2023, the Office of Provost and FAU Libraries celebrated the creative, distinguished, and dedicated work of the FAU community. Authors and Artists Recognition Event, the first of its kind in FAU's recent history, received an enthusiastic response from faculty and staff.

The program received over a hundred submissions from nearly every FAU college and department. During the event, the deans of colleges highlighted selected works and authors. The Libraries put together an exhibit of published books and gave the authors a chance to take a professional photo with their works for the ALA-inspired READ posters. While attending the dessert reception, the guests had a chance to tour the Jaffe Center for Book Arts collection and printing lab.

Interim Provost Michelle Hawkins said the organizers were proud to see artists and authors from so many colleges and departments come forward to share their work published in the past year, including Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, College of Business, College of Social Work and Criminal Justice, College of Education, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, University Libraries, and Undergraduate Studies.

“The Authors & Artists recognition program is essential to developing and nurturing effective faculty relations. We hope it will become a cherished tradition in the years to come as we continue to support the FAU community and its scholarly and creative efforts,” said Interim Provost Michelle Hawkins.

“As we worked through submissions with the deans of colleges and departments, we were amazed by the ingenuity and talent of our faculty and staff,” said Hawkins, adding that the next Authors & Artists Recognition Event in February 2024 would accept not only works published in 2023 but also those published in 2022 if they were not previously submitted.

The Dean of the FAU Libraries, Linda Golian-Lui, said it was an honor to co-host the event with the FAU Provost’s Office.

“Events like this give us a chance to connect with the FAU faculty and staff and present the Libraries as the scholarly and creative center where our community comes together to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and celebrate each other, she said.

“Recognition is important. It motivates us and inspires us to continue our research, author another book, and reach out to fellow faculty members and scientists with collaboration ideas. On behalf of the Office of the Provost and FAU Libraries, I would like to tell you how proud we are to have such talented and driven faculty and staff,” said the Dean of the FAU Libraries, Linda Golian-Lui.

Dean Golian-Lui added that the submissions demonstrated a broad scope and diversity of interests and research topics that the FAU community explores. In the previous academic year, faculty and staff members published works on self-driving cars, shark week, chemistry for health sciences, human trafficking, sparrow songs, hedge funds, and Netflix documentaries, to name a few.

Authors & Artists Recognition Event 2024 will start accepting submissions on July 1, 2023.
