KCJO to Present American Yiddish Songbook in SwingTime

BOCA RATON, Fla. (October 2, 2018) ─ The Florida Atlantic University Libraries and the FAU Jewish Cultural Society will host Aaron Kula’s nine-member Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra (KCJO) for its annual concert of beloved Yiddish songs and traditional klezmer “freilachs and bulgars.”  The American Yiddish Songbook in SwingTime concert will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Friedberg Auditorium at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

KCJO, now in its 21st season, will perform many of the classic klezmer and Yiddish songs from the Jewish Sheet Music Collection in the FAU Libraries Special Collections.  These songs were composed and performed by the leading Klezmer musicians of the 1930s -1960s, many of whom also played in the pit orchestras for the Yiddish Theater on Second Avenue in New York City.  Musicians such as Dave Tarras, Shalom Secunda, Abe Ellstein, and others could also be heard live on WEVD radio with stars of the Yiddish Theater.

“Playing these great klezmer tunes from the Jewish Sheet Music Collection is always great fun for me especially because I grew up with this music in my home, so I know first the emotional impact the music has on the audience” said Kula.

Admission to the program is free for FAU students with an OWL card; $30 for the general public; $25 for JCS members; and $40 for JCS couple members. To purchase tickets, visit https://fauf.fau.edu/jcsklezmer/ or contact James Drayton at 561-297-2186 or jewishculturalsociety@fau.edu.

This concert is sponsored by FAU Libraries and the FAU Jewish Cultural Society, a volunteer support organization whose mission is to advance Jewish cultural traditions and education at FAU libraries through philanthropic endeavors and programs.  Donations to the FAU Jewish Cultural Society and the FAU Libraries are encouraged. Cash, checks and major credit cards are accepted for donations.
