COVID-19 was a watershed moment for Open Access, and many experts state the pandemic asserted the need for scholarly works to be freely available. Most of these works are available through a paywall or institutional subscriptions and omit access to those who cannot afford them or are without subscriptions. At the request of governments and research organizations, major academic publishers temporarily removed paywalls or subscription requirements so their publications could be used to discover treatments, inform public health measures, and learn and communicate more about the disease.
What is Open Access? Open Access is a publishing access model that makes the outputs of scholarly research, ranging from books, journals and data, freely and openly available. It can accelerate research and discovery, and its publications can be repurposed as teaching and learning materials. Open Access began a response to scholarly publishing business models that were viewed as costly and restrictive in terms of access. Open Access journals and scholarly publishers have increased in number, and now 54% of scholarly published works are available via Open Access.
International Open Access Week is observed on October 24 – 30. It is dedicated to promoting Open Access and the various ways students, scholars, and educators utilize it for their teaching, learning, and research. Learn more about Open Access by attending these webinars:
