In August 2022, The White House Office of Science & Technology Policy issued a memorandum, “Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research,” calling on federal agencies to update their public access policies to make publications and research funded by taxpayers publicly accessible, without an embargo or cost. This applies to all federal agencies, including those that fund humanities and social sciences research. Open Access offers many benefits to authors, including wider availability of published work, the ease of sharing, reusing work for teaching and learning, and higher citation counts, which has made it an increasingly popular choice for publication.
To assist Florida Atlantic faculty and staff with the Article Processing Charges (APC) associated with Open Access, Elsevier has extended a 15% discount on APC charges for Florida Atlantic authors and researchers who publish their articles in an Elsevier journal. This is made possible through Florida Atlantic's participation in the State University System Libraries’ ScienceDirect contract. When an author selects Open Access, the discounted price is presented automatically. Authors are responsible for the remaining balance of the APC payment. The Elsevier APC discount has gone into effect this month (January 2024) and will remain in effect through December 2028.
