Dr. Dorothy E. McBride Stetson is a Florida Atlantic University Professor Emeritus of Political Science who taught courses for 40 years in comparative politics, European politics, and women and public policy. Her undergraduate degree includes a B.A. from the University of Montana and she earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. As tenured faculty in FAU’s Department of Political Science, she served as Chair of the department for 8 years, as Associate Dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, Acting Director of Women’s Studies, Interim Chair of the Department of Sociology and the Acting Dean of the College of Social Science. Dr. McBride also served as a founding board member of the Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies from 1985-1996. Dr. Stetson, as she was known during her time with Florida Atlantic University, she also served on the 1972 President’s Commission on the Status of Women and on the President’s Title IX Task Force in 1992. Additionally, she was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politique in Paris and co-director of the Research Network on Gender Politics and the State. Dr. McBride contributed articles and reviews to many publications in her field. Her seven authored and co-authored books include, A Woman’s Issue: the Politics of Family Reform in England, 1982; Women’s Rights in France, 1987; Women’s Rights in the U.S.A: Policy Conflict and Gender Roles, 1997; third edition 2004; Comparative State Feminism, 1995 with Amy G. Mazur; Abortion Politics: Public Policy in Cross National Perspective, 1996 with Marianne Githens; Abortion Politics, Women’s Movements and the Democratic State: A Comparative Study of State Feminism, 2001. Dr. McBride edited the book series Women and Politics in Democratic States and she served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Politics and Women and Politics. McBride retired from Florida Atlantic University in 2005.
