Music Performance & Education (MPE) is a unit within Special Collections that promotes and preserves FAU Libraries print music collections which includes Jazz, Blues, Jewish, Classical, Folk and other genres. In addition to curating the print music collections, MPE is responsible for arranging concerts designed to take the library’s vintage print music from shelf to stage, engaging FAU’s students and the community at large through educational and outreach programs. One of the unit’s signature events is an annual Kultur Festival —a celebration of Jewish music and arts.
Shelf to Stage
"Shelf to Stage" is the phrase used by the unit of Music Performance & Education to describe its unique work with the Print Music Collection at FAU Libraries, which holds over 100,000 musical scores and documents in its Special Collections.
Music staff select valuable and historical music from the collection and create new arrangements, orchestrations, and compositions based on this original sheet music. During Shelf to Stage productions, the MPE staff edit and publish these new scores with parts so they can be performed by today's musicians. In addition to concert events, Music Performance & Education also presents workshops and lectures about its work with the Print Music Collection. Director of Music Performance and Education, Aaron Kula, performs concerts and collaborates with local musicians, educators, librarians, and artists to create multicultural, interdisciplinary programming for people of all ages.
Print Music Collections
The Print Music Collections at Florida Atlantic University Libraries contain more than 30,000 musical scores and documents organized in four large collections: American Popular, Classical, Jewish, and Cantors. These materials date from the 17th through 21st centuries and include rare and unique manuscripts, published scores, and sheet music. The repertoire includes scores for solo voice, choir, solo instruments, jazz combos, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. These collections provide an invaluable resource for both scholars and performers and we continue to accept donations that enhance our holdings and preserve this rich musical heritage.
